Verse Of The Day – Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

Understanding Isaiah 9:6-7

In Isaiah 9:6-7, the prophet Isaiah foretells the birth of a child who will bring great blessings and establish an everlasting kingdom. This passage is a prophecy about the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The Birth of a Child

The verse begins by proclaiming, “For to us a child is born, to us, a son is given.” This child refers to Jesus, who was born in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. The significance of this birth lies in the fact that Jesus was not an ordinary child – He was the Son of God, sent to redeem humanity from sin.

Government on His Shoulders

The verse continues by stating, “And the government will be on his shoulders.” This phrase symbolizes the authority and responsibility that Jesus bears as the Messiah. It signifies that He will have dominion over all things, including political and earthly realms.

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Isaiah then describes the titles that will be given to this child, emphasizing His divine nature and the role He will play. The child will be called “Wonderful Counselor,” representing His wisdom and guidance. He will be referred to as “Mighty God,” highlighting His deity and power. Furthermore, He will be known as the “Everlasting Father,” indicating His eternal nature and loving care. Finally, Jesus will be recognized as the “Prince of Peace,” bringing reconciliation and harmony to a broken world.

The Greatness of His Government

The verse goes on to declare, “Of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end.” This statement emphasizes the eternal nature of Jesus’ kingdom. Unlike earthly governments that rise and fall, Jesus’ reign will endure forever. His government will be characterized by righteousness, justice, and everlasting peace.

Reign on David’s Throne

Isaiah further prophesies that the child will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom. This reference to David’s throne connects Jesus to the lineage of King David, as the promised Messiah was foretold to be from the house of David. Jesus fulfills this prophecy as He is a descendant of David, born into the royal lineage.

Establishing Justice and Righteousness

The verse states that Jesus will establish and uphold His kingdom with justice and righteousness. This emphasizes the divine principles of fairness, equity, and moral uprightness that will characterize Jesus’ reign. He will rule with perfect justice, ensuring that righteousness prevails in His kingdom.

The Zeal of the Lord Almighty

The verse concludes by affirming that the accomplishment of these prophecies rests in the zeal of the Lord Almighty. It highlights God’s passion and commitment to fulfill His promises. The birth and reign of Jesus are not mere human endeavors but are divinely orchestrated and driven by God’s unwavering determination.

Conclusion

Isaiah 9:6-7 provides a profound glimpse into the coming of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. It highlights His divine nature, His role as the ruler of an everlasting kingdom, and the establishment of justice and righteousness. This prophecy is a testament to God’s faithfulness and His plan for salvation through His Son. As we reflect on these verses, let us celebrate the birth of Jesus and embrace His reign as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
